Why I fundraise for CHOC
With our raffle fundraiser event for the CHOC Children’s Foundation, I wanted to share with you about our buddy Carter. This little boy made (and continues to make) such an impact on so many peoples lives, and I hope that reading about him impacts you.
My husband Brad knew Carter since he was born. He grew up to be the BIGGEST fan of Brad’s band (@suburbanlegends) that played in Disneyland for years. He was the sweetest little boy and so full of life, and seeing him dance at their shows was always the highlight of the night.
Carter passed away when he was 6 years old when I was 3 months pregnant with my oldest son. I mention this because being pregnant with my first child and seeing someone else lose theirs resulted in feelings I can’t even put into words. Often throughout my pregnancy I would just hold my belly and cry and wish I could take Carter’s family’s pain away.
Below is his story, from Carter's mom, Jamie, about how CHOC impacted him and his family’s lives:
My son, Carter, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on October 2, 2015 one month before his 5th birthday, forever changing our lives. He underwent chemotherapy treatments at CHOC for 21 months at CHOC before finding out he relapsed on July 5, 2017 essentially starting over at day one of 3.5 years of treatment. On October 8, 2017 Carter passed away suddenly and shockingly due to a rare infection that occurred as a result of chemotherapy treatment. While his loss is devastating, Carter continues to inspire his friends and family to spread kindness every day, live life without fear, and to find a cure for cancer. We are forever grateful for the care CHOC provided us during treatment. Carter never feared going to the hospital and the staff and facilities made our stays the best we could have hoped for during one of the scariest times of our lives.CHOC is such a wonderful foundation that brings comfort to so many people.
